With MPs asked to approve N$17 million of the Budget for the funding of political parties, opposition MP Tsudao Gurirab said last week he was concerned about the lack of detail on what this money would be spent on.

Gurirab warned fellow MPs during debate on the budget for the National Assembly that until more details regarding what parties intended to do with the money was provided, the public could easily argue that this money was not being used for that which it was intended.

He suggested that parties be made to account for the amounts they are given. His proposal was supported by Veterans' Affairs Minister Ngarikutuke Tjiriange, who said MPs were being asked to sign off on the equivalent of a blank cheque.

"It is just logical to be held accountable if you're given money to spend on something. But here, are we told to spend this money in certain ways? Or is it like a blank cheque?" he asked. The request was opposed by Prime Minister Nahas Angula, who said the Office of the Attorney General was at liberty to look through parties' budgets.

"To give the impression that there is no accounting is very unfortunate," Angula said. Gurirab's final comment on the topic was that he did not believe the AG's office was responsible for the auditing of political parties' books.

"N$17 million will go out this financial year, and that will just be it," he said.
