Mozambique: Killer Dog Terrorises Maputo Neighbourhood

20 April 2008

Maputo — Residents of the Maputo neighbourhood of Khongolote have been in panic since late February over attacks of a killer dog that has already made at least four victims, reports Saturday's issue of the daily 'Noticias'.

Though this has been going for some time, the first reports came during a rally conducted by a brigade of the ruling Frelimo party recently, when the residents said that the first case occurred on 22 February when a 'strange' dog attacked a pregnant woman who was seating with children in her yard.

Looking at the dog, the children fled inside the house, and the beast attacked the women, biting in her hand, which caused her death within days.

The widower of the victim, Armando Chauque, said that his wife, Cecilia Sitoe, was taken to the local health centre for treatment. Before her death she had been healthy, said Chauque.

Other cases followed in the same neighbourhood, and all showed dog bites in their hands. All sought hospital treatment for no avail.

No one knows as yet the whereabouts of the dog, or where it came from.

Medical authorities believe that this is one more case of rabies virus, against which the Mozambican authorities launched recently a vaccination campaign.
