Mozambique: Mayor Urges Passengers to Denounce Offenders

20 April 2008

Maputo — Maputo mayor Eneas Comiche urged residents of different Maputo suburbs to denounce any offences by privately owned taxis, which are the main providers of transport in the city.

Addressing a rally gathering residents of at least four neighbourhoods, Eneas Comiche said that such denouncements should be done through noting number plates of the vehicles involved, and notification to the police.

'Because vehicles have allocated routes, which are duly identified, and which must be respected, residents of the municipalities must be vigilant about that, and whenever such routes are not respected, we must denounce', said Comiche, while reiterating all limitations of the police, who, he said, are lacking the necessary means to carry out their properly.

Talking about those who are operating with no licenses and, as a consequence, with no verification of their vehicles' mechanical state, he said that the passenger has a full right to claim a good service.

As for the complaints by the citizens whenever they feel they are being ill served, Comiche said that ' if your problems are above the 'municipal ombudsman' or if he is not available, I will be here, as the mayor. What is important is for us not to cross our hands when we see irregularities happening. We must defend our life and our quality life.
