Lobatste MP Nehemiah Modubule has confirmed reports that he has been indefinitely suspended from the main opposition party, the Botswana National Front (BNF).

He told Mmegi yesterday that he received a suspension letter from Lobatse BNF constituency secretary Joseph Kgangetsile. "I have been advised by my attorney not to say anything at this moment," Modubule said.

BNF publicity chief, Moeti Mohwasa confirmed that the MP has been suspended from the party, though he declined to give details saying the matter is internal. The confirmation clarifies reports this week that Modubule is one of the MPs targeted for suspension. The others are Akanyang Magama of Gaborone South and Robert Molefhabangwe of Gaborone West South, reports say. Chairman of the BNF disciplinary committee, Lemogang Ntime has indicated that they have not been briefed about Modubule's suspension. Ntime revealed that his committee is normally sent a letter with charges before it can announce a date for a hearing.

"One is also notified to bring witnesses or a representative who is a party member," said Ntime. Modubule's suspension comes hardly a week after the BNF chairman Bashi Sengwaketsi wrote a letter ordering him to desist from talking to the media about party matters.

The letter accuses the MP of breaking the party's code of discipline by publicly arguing that the BNF should hold a congress instead of a national conference preferred by the party executive.
