Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma met the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Dr Navin Ramgoolam, on 21 April 2008 to underscore the Commonwealth's commitment to support the government and people of the Indian Ocean nation of Mauritius.

On the last leg of an African tour that has already taken him to Uganda and Kenya, Sharma congratulated the Prime Minister on the successful hosting of the Southern African Development Community International Conference on Poverty and Development, which he addressed, and applauded the progress Mauritius had made in transforming its economy and society.

The Secretary-General briefed the Prime Minister on progress made in implementing salient mandates from the Kampala Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, including on such issues as international institution reform, transforming societies for political, economic and human development, the environment and promoting respect and understanding within societies.

Mr Sharma stressed that the Commonwealth was a partner for its member states in promoting institutional development and national capacities, and that it would sustain its support and assistance to small states in particular.

He also paid courtesy calls on the President of Mauritius, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, and Paul Berenger, Leader of the Opposition.

Mauritius consistently scores highly in indices for doing business in Africa and governance standards.
