Angola: Country Hosts Fourth CPLP Environment Ministers Conference

Luanda — Angola will host as from Tuesday (April 22), at Talatona Conventions Centre, to the south of Luanda, the fourth conference of Environment ministers of the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community (CPLP).

At a press conference held this Monday to inform about the organisation and technical aspects of the event, the Angolan minister for the sector, Diakumpuna Sita José said that all conditions have been created for the success of the gathering.

According to the official, the presence of every environment minister of the eight countries that make up the community has been confirmed.

The event shall be divided into two segments: technical (from April 22 to 23) and ministerial (April 24), also including parallel meeting of the Waters Departments of member States, meeting of focal points of environmental education and of representatives of environmental associations.

Topics such as biodiversity, climatic changes, combat to desertification and reducing the effects of draughts, ecotourism, and environmental education, environmental management of the coastal and marine zone, solid residues, and water resources are also part of the agenda of debates.

In the light of the meeting, according to the official, Angola will sign with Portugal and with Guinea Bissau two memorandums of understanding for the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climatic Changes and of the Kyoto Protocol.

The event shall also define a programme of activity for the 2008/2010 period, and the "Luanda Declaration" will be adopted during the final session.

CPLP comprises Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor.
