The lone Anglo-Saxon oriented varsity in Cameroon, University of Buea, UB, is amongst the fifteen higher institutions of learning, taking part at the on-going Cameroon University Games, which opened Saturday, April 19 in the University of Douala.

Unlike in the previous editions, the management and the athletes of the nine sporting disciplines, which UB is fielding for the competitions, are upbeat that they will grab more juicy medals this year, thanks to a rigorous preparatory package put in place.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Internal Control and Evaluation, Prof. Nzumbe Mesape Ntoko, who supervised UB's preparation, is confident that his delegation's participation at the week-long games in Douala will be a huge success thanks to their preparation which took off in February. "Our preparation was very intensive.

Though we're regarded as an academic oriented university, you can't also be a good academic without having a good sporting life. Sports create a complete human being. Academics is complimentary with sports. We're going to do our very best and obtain what we deserve, because we're very honest in our participation. We don't hire mercenaries like others do," he mentioned.

To his athletes and the entire UB delegation, Ntoko prescribed good behaviours, being dignified emissaries of UB while bringing back more medals.Adamou Usman, a student of UB, from the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences and player with the UB Lawn Tennis team was satisfied with their preparatory plan. "Unlike last year in Ngaoundere, we had time to work on our shortcomings. Largely, we had a smooth training session.

The misunderstandings were minor issues, which were rapidly tackled by the concerned authorities. We put in our best during the period of training. We're fit the competitions," he noted.

He brushed aside the argument that UB is all book and there is no place for sporting activities. "During our preparatory meetings, we raised the issue of sporting activities in the university. The sporting roots have been planted and in the no distant future, UB will be on the limelight of university games in Cameroon. We've promised that we shall make it real big in Douala," he said.

Ernestine Mikon, a student of the Department of Political Science, UB and player of the UB Female Lawn Tennis squad took the commitment to go for the gold medal this time. "We're on the right track; our coaches have put us in the right mood. This is my fourth participation at the varsity games. I've had the bronze medals; the gold medal is my objective now," he wished.

She prayed that the UB administration should give them the much needed prop. These include; sporting attire, equipments and financial motivation. "UB has a lot of talented athletes who can fetch a lot of medals for the institution but the response from the administration is sometime very timid. Hence, students are forced to shy away from sporting activities in the campus," Mikon commented.

Maximus Njonge is with the UB Handball team and a student in the Department of Economics. He is optimistic about their performance. "We've put in our all in the preparations. Unlike last year, this year, we will be up-to-the-task. There will be a change in our performance.

We're heading for gold. I'm confident about that," he said enthusiastically. The keeper of the UB football team, John Paul Abossi and a student of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology saw a motivated UB football team. "Since October 2007, we've been on the ground training; physically, morally and more. I look forward to stop the incursions from our opponents," he promised.

The UB female football squad is not left out in the show. Helene Yogo is in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and party to that maiden team. She looks forward to a successful campaign in Douala. "Our training sessions have been effective. We've had three friendly matches and won all.

These are indications that we shall go places in the Douala rendez-vous. We're conscious of the experienced female football teams from the University of Yaounde I and II respectively. But we're young, not discouraged and ready to chip in our all."
