SDF National Chairman, John Fru Ndi, has called on Cameroonians to observe Monday, April 21, as National Day of Mourning for the country.
According to a press release titled "The Death of Democracy in Cameroon" from the SDF Secretariat on April 12, the SDF calls on Cameroonians to offer special prayers for the country and observe a National Day of Mourning for the death of youths who were killed in the recent crisis in the country.
"I call on all to observe a National Day of Mourning for the death of our youths who were killed recently and for the death of democracy in our country by staying indoors, dressed in their mourning attire, on Monday, April 21, with the exception of those involved in emergency services in hospitals, health centres and pharmacies," the release reads in part.
The SDF Chair said the death of democracy in Cameroon stems from the amendment of Bill No. 819/PJL/AN, at the National Assembly indicating the removal of the term limitation of office for the President, thereby making him life President, unlawful acts committed by Mr Biya while in office as President that shall be covered by immunity and the fact that he shall never be held accountable for them, as well as the impossibility to impeach him for high treason..
Fru Ndi said there is nothing in the constitutional amendment that has any benefit to Cameroonians as a people and Cameroon as a nation. He said the President is trying to divert attention by belatedly and selectively arresting a few of the numerous embezzlers who are his closest associates, with the belief that by doing so, he can deceive Cameroonians to accept him as a virtual monarch.
According to Fru Ndi, the amendment is a deliberate move for the President to institutionalise corruption, impunity and inertia. He called on the children of those parliamentarians who adopted this amendment to take serious note that their parents were the ones that assisted Mr. Biya to murder democracy in Cameroon in 2008.
He stated that the SDF supports the youths and all Cameroonians in the fight for their legitimate rights and aspirations for their future but cautioned against vandalism and destruction.
