If there is one programme over Mount Cameroon FM station that helps elderly people to relive their days, it is Yesterday, which is fondly called Old Timers.
The old timer feeling that suddenly caught the ever increasing audience and the need to have more live entertainments led to the creation of the Old Timers Band, OTB, in 2000. The Band has become a source of entertainment not only of elderly people, but also of the younger generation that relishes the highlife music of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.
The OTB, an idea of Kevin Njomo, veteran journalist working with Mount Cameroon FM, Buea, has gone beyond just entertaining people through Yesterday to helping the elderly and needy.
Over the weekend, some members of the OTB, including Kevin Njomo and Patience Esoka, came to the needs of some elderly people in Buea and Tiko, where they dolled out bags of rice, salt, cartons of soaps sugar, 24 bush lamps etc. The solemn ceremony took place at the Borstal Institute Buea in the presence of Southwest Social Affairs Delegate, Valentine Asongtia Foretia.
The Band leader, Kevin Njomo, said the gesture was giving a humanitarian touch to their activities beside entertainment. "During our periods of entertainment, we found out that we can provide for ourselves and why not think of those who cannot provide for themselves, especially the elderly people who are in a state of destitution," he said.
According to Njomo, funds for this gesture were realised during their last show in Buea where the Nigerian Consul General to the Northwest and Southwest Provinces, Dr. Kenneth Nsor, Hon Rose Abunaw and Hon Paul Njie Meoto, among others made generous donations.

He told The Post that there are more galas coming up, where they hope to raise funds for other humanitarian works. "On May 10, we shall be in Kumba, where we intend to raise funds to help the Deaf and Dump Institute, EPHATA Kumba. From Kumba, the next stop will be Bamenda and why not go nationwide. We are also targeting orphanages and many more projects," he said.
Earlier, the Director of Borstal Institute, Bayard Nkwelle, praised the efforts of the OTB to alleviate the conditions of the elderly persons. On behalf of the beneficiaries, Pa William Fonderson prayed that the OTB continues to do more for the elderly. "We're glad to see our children do this for us. Initially, we thought it was the Ministry of Social Affairs coming to commune with us."
On his part, Southwest Social Affairs Delegate thanked the Band for their sense of social responsibility. He saw in the action of OTB, the Ministry of Social Affairs' policy of social solidarity.
