Somalia, or what has been left of it, is smouldering again. Yet, the international community appears little concerned as the Islamists continue to gain new ground.

Lest we forget, we have a very volatile neighbour.

News coming from that country and the increasing activity of the Islamists should be a cause of concern not only for Kenya but for the international community.

We also must not forget that Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, one of the suspected organizers of the US Embassy bombings in Nairobi, is also said to be in hiding in Somalia.

Abdullah, who is on the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) list of the most wanted people, is said to have evaded an attack by the American air force near the Kenyan border.

Why should Somalia be an issue for us? The main reason is security. We cannot afford to have the kind of lawlessness in the horn of Africa as we look the other way.

We should also realize that as long as we have a collapsed state, the global war on terror will never achieve its aims as the country will remain a breeding ground for terrorists.

The Somalia question must resolved as a matter of urgency. Failure to do that will poison the entire region.
