Luanda — The prime minister of Angola, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos arrived back in Luanda on Monday evening from Port Louis, Mauritius, where he attended the International Conference on Poverty and Development of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, who represented the Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, led an Angolan delegation to the conference that approved, last Sunday, a series of strategies aimed at reducing poverty and the promotion of sustainable development in the region.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the Angolan premier met with King Mswati III, of Swaziland, with whom he analysed matters relating to the cooperation between both States.
He also met with the EU commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michael, who praised the Angolan government for the way it has been preparing the legislative elections, scheduled for next September.
During the conference, which outlined strategies for the eradication of poverty in the region until 2015, topics such as "SADC's regional integration agenda - towards the economic growth and the eradication of poverty" and "Social and environmental dimensions in the region".
Eliminating gaps in terms of aptitude, innovations and technologies necessary for the reduction of poverty was another issue discussed at te meeting.
The republics of Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the kingdoms of Lesotho and of Swaziland attended the Port Louis conference, at the highest level.
Apart from the prime minister, Angola was represented, at the gathering, by the minister of Planning, Ana Dias Lourenço, the President's adviser on Regional Affairs, Albina Assis, and the deputy ministers of Agriculture and Rural Development, Filomena Delgado, of Trade, Cruz Neto, and of Foreign Affairs, George Chicoty.
