Kampala — THE Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels are recruiting and abducting civilians in Irengete, DR Congo. The 2nd Division army spokesperson, Capt. Kiconco Tabaro, said the United Nations Peacekeepers in DR Congo (MONUC) had not yet eliminated Ugandan rebels in the area.

"Despite the expansion of MONUC's activities in DR Congo, rebel activities in the country's eastern region have remained intact," said Tabaro over the weekend.

The ADF efforts to attack Uganda, he said, would be squashed. The last major encounter with the ADF was on March 27, 2006 when the army killed rebel commanders Isuku Baruwa and Nabisoro, he added.

Maj. Gervias Kambale of the 42nd Battalion in Beni said Congo was trying to fulfill the bilateral agreement signed by the two heads of state to end the insurgency in the country.

The latest report on the rebel activities comes after the capture of a senior ADF rebel by Congolese authorities on April 19. Stanley Masereka was handed over to the UPDF over the weekend. The Uganda delegation was led by the 21st Battalion commander, Maj. Herbert Makanga.

He handed over four Congolese dissidents arrested in Uganda on March 18. They had been charged with illegal entry with intent to carry out hostile activities.

Kambale led the Congolese side. Masereka, of Kasese district, said he was abducted by by ADF in July 1997.
