The Africa Secretariat of the World Association of Non-Governmental Organisa-tions (WANGO) has slated Saturday April 26 for the public presentation and flag-off of Zero Illiteracy Project (ZIP), a press release signed by Mohammed Bougei Attah, the Africa Regional Coordinator has disclosed.

ZIP is a new initiative of WANGO and is aimed at boosting literacy level in sub-Saharan Africa and is managed by the Africa Regional Office. It will be launched during the upcoming 2008 WANGO Africa Conference to be held in Ghana between April 24-26.

According to the press release, participating countries in the pilot programme re categorised into two,the first being Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Zambia while Chad Republic, Somalia and Sudan represent North African states and Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe Southern Africa states.

The rest of Africa will constitute the second category. WANGO had discovered that only one out of five Africans had access to Western education with less than 20% of inhabitants of the world's third largest continent benefiting from Information and Communi-cation Technology (ICT) and tertiary (post-secondary) education.

"These limitations no doubt pose great challenges to the pace of development in Africa, especially in the areas of economy, political and social.

It is a known fact that these gaps created by the above factors are tied to the level of our education. The ultimate advantage for ZIP is the use of the worldwide network of NGOs to tackle this menance the release added.
