Windhoek — The High Commissioner of Botswana to Namibia, Norman Moleboge, yesterday responded to President Hifikepunye Pohamba's appeal for aid from the international community in the wake of devastating floods in the northern regions of the country.
The Botswana High Commission donated 500000 pula (N$613450) to people in the flood-stricken areas.
Recently, the President declared floods in the Omusati, Ohangwena, Oshana, Oshikoto and Caprivi regions, a national emergency and made an impassioned appeal for international aid. It was this appeal that prompted the Botswana High Commission to make the generous donation, one of the biggest so far.
Officially handing over the donation to the Prime Minister, Nahas Angula, Moleboge was hopeful that the donation would alleviate the situation in which flood victims find themselves.
"The cheque presented on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Botswana to the Government of the Republic of Namibia is a donation that symbolises the bonds of solidarity, friendship, compassion and the spirit of neighbourliness that exists between the Republics of Botswana and Namibia," said the High Commissioner.
He said people in Botswana have been following with great sadness and sympathy the events since the floods hit the northern areas of the country.
"Therefore this donation is an expression of our wish towards the speedy normalisation of the lives of the people of the affected areas in Namibia," said Moleboge.
The Prime Minister welcomed the kind gesture, adding that he will deliver it to the relevant authorities.
The floods worsened by heavy rains in southern Angola have affected more than 65000 people. Crops have been destroyed and houses flooded.
As a result, people were left homeless and lost most of their belongings including livestock.
