Angola: Malanje to Have Dry Port

22 April 2008

Malanje — Northern Malanje province will soon have a dry port, in light of the Angoferro programme, to reactivate the local industrial sector and enable the flow of goods to the provinces of Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Moxico, Bié and Uíge.

ANGOP learnt of the information on Monday from the deputy governor for the Economic and Social sphere, Gaspar Neto, whilst speaking in Malanje city on the sidelines of the International Conference of Economic Journalists of the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community (CPLP).

According to the official, the "rehabilitation of the Luanda-Malanje railway will enable the train, designed to carry loads, to transport goods from the Port of Luanda to Malanje province and others, therefore the need for creating a dry port".

The source neither revealed the amount of the project's budget nor the date for the start of the works.

He referred that the future Dry Port of Malanje will serve as a springboard for the region's development, since it will enable a greater flow of goods to the province, overcoming the risks faced when these are transported by trucks, travelling a distance of over 400 kilometres by road.

According to some ongoing studies, in the future, the Luanda-Malanje railway might be expanded to northern Uíge province.
