Eldoret — Two police officers were shot dead by six armed men who had hijacked a bus on the Eldoret-Nakuru highway.

The gangsters posing as passengers also shot a passenger in the neck as they sprayed the two officers with bullets in the 11am incident.

The officers were shot at close range by the gangsters who were aboard the bus belonging to Akamba Bus Service company on Saturday night.

The policemen were escorting the bus from Malaba to Nairobi when the incident took place.

According to the co-driver of the bus Mr Rogers Juma two of the gangsters who were in the bus shot at the two officersbefore commandeering the vehicle into a forest towards Drys' Girls secondary school.

"One of the gangsters shot the police officer who was seated at the back of the vehicle before shooting the one at the front," said Mrs Esther Nekesa who was bruised during the attack.

It is said the gunmen were joined by another group who intercepted the bus before shooting the officers.

"After robbing us, the attackers went back to the bus and fired more shots at the two police officers before fleeing," added Mr Juma.

However, Uasin Gishu OCPD Mr Muinde Kioko who visited the scene near Timboroa trading centre said the officers were seriously injured and were rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, though hospital sources confirmed that the policemen were dead.
