22 April 2008

With the euphoria of the opening day now over, the battle for medals has started in earnest in the ongoing 11th edition of the university games in Douala. Already, athletes from the higher institute of Youth and Sports have distinguished themselves from the lot, with seven medals to their credit; four golds, one silver and three bronze medals. The medals were won in the athletics finals which took place yesterday. INJS got gold in the 100m 800m feminine races, as well as the 800m tricycle race.

The University of Ngaoundere is second on the tally sheet with five medals; one gold, three silver and one bronze medal. The University of Yaounde II comes in the fifth position despite having won three medals; two silver and one bronze. On the contrary, the national school of Public Works though with two medals, is in the third position thanks to the gold medal won in the 10.000m race and silver in javelin. The University of Buea in the fourth position equally has two medals; one gold and one bronze. By press time the finals in judo and table tennis were still taking place and the results may upset the tables.

The University of Ngaoundere which has so far topped the medals charts ever since the beginning of the competition, has only two bronze medals. But the mother university is expected to bounce back once the finals in team sports such as football, handball, volleyball and basketball, take place. For now the competition is taking place in all fairness as no case of fraud has been detected yet.
