Windhoek — The University of Namibia (Unam) has bagged yet another lucrative consultancy project, this time compliments of Namibia Post Limited (NamPost).

A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed on Wednesday by Nampost representative Norman Cloete on behalf of outgoing CEO Sakaria Nghikembua and Unam's Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Osmund Mwandemele.

In terms of the agreement, the tertiary institution will provide courses on information and communication skills to NamPost employees for a period of three years.

The university was awarded the tender by the postal utility after its proposal was accepted as the most viable to satisfy the training needs of the postal company.

The project has a price tag of N$2 million and part of the money will be used to buy 30 mobile notebooks to be used during the training period.

Mwandemele expressed delight with NamPost for having chosen the university as its training partner. He promised that the university would do its best to ensure that it satisfies the training needs of the postal company.

"Our hope is to make NamPost a leading company in terms of empowering its employees with ICT skills which are so vital in this globally connected world. I would like to assure you that Unam will do its best to meet the NamPost expectations and those of the public," said Mwandemele.

NamPost emphasised that it has confidence in the tertiary institution to impart training to its employers.

"We are convinced that Unam has the requisite expertise to deliver," announced Cloete on behalf of Nghikembua.

NamPost believes that the training will go a long way in improving customer service as well as contribute significantly to the growth of the company.

Training agreements of this nature are not new to the university. Through its strategic plan, the university was mandated to find new avenues for alternative funding, alongside government subsidies.

This gave birth to the University of Namibia Central Consultancy Bureau (UCCB), its consultancy arm.

Recently the UCCB, assisted by the Research Unit of the University, the Multi-Disciplinary Research and Consultancy Centre (MDRCC), was commissioned to conduct research for the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund.
