AFTER The Namibian threw the spotlight on conditions at the former Ramatex living quarters last week, workers employed by the textile company have started cleaning the rooms left behind in a chaotic state by Asian workers who left the country about a month ago.
Since Friday the workers have been cleaning the rooms and yards of the hostel.
All the personal belongings left behind were placed into plastic bags and loaded onto a truck.
Furniture, except for the beds, mattresses and wardrobes, is being taken apart and dumped at the Kupferberg dumping site.
The beds, wardrobes and mattresses apparently belong to Government.
The filth and decay at the Ramatex hostel were revealed when The Namibian covered a rescue operation by the Cat Protection Society (CPS) last week.
The animal welfare charity had been alerted to the plight of more than 100 cats left to starve at the Ramatex hostel.
Several dead cats and kittens were found in locked rooms, where they had starved to death.
To date the CPS has caught 88 cats, of which 48 had to be put down because they were too injured, sick or malnourished to pull through.
It is estimated that there are still about 20 cats on the premises and the operation is continuing until they can all be removed.
They are being fed by CPS volunteers in the meantime. Eighteen of the rescued cats have found good homes.
The others - mostly young cats of about six months old - are still awaiting adoption.
