Mozambique: First Open Heart Surgery in Country

22 April 2008

Maputo — The Mozambican National Health Service is now in conditions to carry out open heart surgeries, following the first successful such intervention at the Maputo Central Hospital on Monday morning, that took about three hours, reports Tuesday's issue of the daily 'Noticias'.

The surgery, on the 12-year-old Carlos Maposse, of the Maputo province, involved a team of Mozambican surgeons, headed by Atilio Morais, assisted by Spanish specialists in different areas.

Maposse was suffering from a congenital mal-formation heart disease and, according to the specialists, who said that but for this operation, he would live no more than seven to eight years more.

Now it is possible for Mozambican patients to receive treatment in the country and no more have to resort to treatment abroad.

The Mozambican specialists received training in Spain. 'We now have the capacity to solve in the country heart disease problems that we have been diagnosing but that we had to send abroad', said Maputo Central Hospital director Francisco Candido.

Heart operations in Mozambique were being performed at the Heart Institute, which is not part of the National Health Services.
