Nairobi — Only eight out of the 56 permanent secretaries are women, falling way short of the pledges of affirmative action by President Kibaki, Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka.
Out of the 19 new faces the President picked in his Monday appointments, four were women. Consequently, four women who served as PSs in the last government were dropped and replaced by men.
The new faces appointed are PS Ministry for Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs Ambassador Amina Mohammed, Ministry for Gender and Children Department PS Ms Leah Adda Gwiyo, Secretary for Children Affairs Prof Jacqueline Oduol and PS Ministry for Labour Ms Beatrice Wasike.
Those who faced the sack are Ms Joyce Nyamweya (formerly at Public Sector Reforms) who was replaced by Mr Richard Ndubai and Ms Alice Kemunto Mayaka (formerly of Special Programmes), who was replaced by Mr Seno Nyakenyanya.
Also missing on the list was Ms Rachael Arunga who was dropped in favour of Mr Ali Dawood in the Ministry of Special Programmes and Ms Rachael Dzombo who was replaced by Mr Daniel Maanzo in the Sports ministry.
The women who were retained include Investment Secretary Ms Esther Koimett, Ambassador Nancy Kirui (Defence), Ms Dorothy Angote (Lands), and Ms Rebecca Nabutola (Tourism).
