Nairobi — Police in Nairobi were on Monday night alerted over an alleged planned Mungiki riot that never was.
Contingents of police officers were mobilised and put at strategic positions following reports that members of the outlawed sect planned to stage a demo in the city in honour of the slain wife of their leader Maina Njenga.
The reports indicated that the demonstrators would march through the streets before gathering at a city funeral home where they would pick up the body at 3am for burial.
But the sect leaders denied the reports terming them as rumours. "We have not even met to plan the burial and so I do not know where these rumours are coming from," said a Mungiki official who sought anonymity.
The bodies of Virginia Nyakio and her driver George Njoroge were found dumped in a forest in Gatundu on April 9 a day after they were abducted by unknown people along Lang'ata Road.
Elsewhere, former Nakuru MP, Mr David Manyara and businessman Mr Zakayo Maina have petitioned a Nakuru court to order an inquiry into police allegations that they are members of the outlawed Mungiki sect.
Through their lawyers, the two said they would not sign bond to keep peace for one year as applied by a police officer through an affidavit.
