Namibia: 'Sensitive' Equipment Vanishes

23 April 2008

Otjiwarongo — The Town Council of Tsumeb is investigating the disappearance of 'sensitive' equipment from the municipality.

Tsumeb Mayor Engel Nawatiseb told Nampa that 'sensitive municipal equipment', including tools for maintaining cleanliness at the town, disappeared without trace some months ago.

Although he did not reveal the exact value of the equipment, he said "it cost the municipality a fortune".

"No one has accounted for it, but the town council internally is hard at work to trace the suspects," he said.

He said the council was also investigating cases of illegal renting of municipal houses by its employees.

Nawatiseb said some town council employees were renting out municipal houses to get extra income.

"It is an illegal operation, we are going to deal with those who are involved in such clandestine operations," he warned, adding that he "will not tolerate this destructive tendency" in his town.

"I know we will make more enemies for interfering in the operation, but we will also not allow the situation to get out of hand," he said.
