Namibia: SKW Youth Tourney a Hit

23 April 2008

A total of 48 teams converged on the SKW premises last weekend to compete in 78 games to determine the winner in each of the U/8, U/9, U/11, U/13, U/15 and U/17 categories.

Guided by the excellent management team of the SKW Youth Division, the tournament set very high standards both in organizational ability and discipline maintained by all teams involved.

The eventual winners of the different age groups came from various football clubs and youth academies.

"The fact that close to 50 teams showed up goes to show that the clubs and academies have wholeheartedly embraced the concept of youth development at club level.

If the commitment and effort shown by all those involved continues in the same vein we are certainly on the right way to building a healthy base for football development in Namibia," said the PRO of Cymot SKW, Rolf Beiter.

"Special mention must also go to Retirement Fund Solutions who came to the party as the main sponsors of this tournament" Beiter added.

Looking at the action on the pitch, Swallows FC were the winners of the Under 8 age group, after beating Swakopmund Football Club (SFC) in the final.

Khomas Football Academy (KFA) and Namibia Football Development Programme (NYFDP) contested the Under 9 final, with KFA winning 2-0.

SFC were once again on the losing side when they were beaten 1-0 by Ramblers FC in the U/11 category.

NYFDP displayed total dominance in the U/13 age group when they hammered Ramblers FC 8-2 in the final.

The first of two finals between Cymot SKW and Ramblers FC went Ramblers' way after they secured the cup in the U15 age group with a 2-0 victory.

The highlight of the day came in the Under 17 final, where Ramblers and Cymot SKW played out an entertaining 3-all draw.

Ramblers took an early lead but soon found themselves 2-1 behind.

They managed to equalise in the second half and scored another to take a 3-2 lead.

Cymot SKW however grabbed an equaliser shortly before the end of the game.

This meant that the winner had to be determined via a penalty shootout.

Cymot SKW eventually ran out 5-4 winners of a tense and hard-fought final.
