Cameroon: Four Million Children to be Treated of Worms

Four million children are to be de-wormed this year throughout all the ten provinces in Cameroon.

This information was revealed yesterday during the third meeting of the National Programme for the Control of Schistosomiasis and Intestinal Helminthiasis. The meeting which was chaired by the Minister of Public Health, André Mama Mama Fouda, gathered partners in the fight against Schistosomiasis and Intestinal Helminthiasis in a bid to discuss strategies that could best reach the targeted group for the campaign.

Minister André Mama Mama Fouda said, there is the political engagement and strong mobilisation from the government and partners to fight Schistosomiasis and Intestinal Helminthiasis. Reason why the population needs to be educated to improve on their hygienic conditions so as to prevent these worms which are a great public health problem in the society. Public Health boss said the ambitious plan of action to de-worm four million children this year is a big challenge that needs enormous financial and material resources. That is why yesterday's meeting at the Ministry of Public Health mobilised all partners involved in the fight against worms so that each person could bring his contribution towards de-worming children in Cameroon.

The President of the National Programme for the Control of Schistosomiasis and Intestinal Helminthiasis, Professor Louis-Albert Tchuem Tchuente said the campaign to begin in the month of October will constitute of de-worming all children of school age group as well as those between ten months to five years. School premises are the channel that will be used to reach the target population given that the vulnerable group falls within those in primary school.

Children who are not yet in school will be reached through their communities. Those involved in giving the drugs to children include, headmasters, teachers and community drugs distributors. These groups of people will be trained before the campaign period. Drugs used in de-worming children have been given by partners of the Ministry of Public Health amongst which is the pharmaceutical industry Johnson and Johnson.
