Cameroon: The Midnight Games

Most students in institutions of higher learning look forward to the University Games with a lot of expectations. Normal.

The Games give them an opportunity to get away from book work. And what else? Meet new faces and do other things. Of course. So, the action is on in Douala where the 11th Varsity Games are underway. The latest unofficial report says there are two main activities going on in Douala - the Official Games in the day and the Midnight Games; with some female students playing key roles on both pitches.

The paradox is that the "athletes" for the Midnight Games are generally selected during the day-time event. Little wonder, the Games vicinity has become a big hunting ground with "mbomas" flooding in to chase juicy preys. It is indeed a free-for-all feast; the "man-helep-himself" type. Even some officials and others brought in to ensure the success of the event are having their fair share of the fun!

The story is told of how a journalist and an official of the Ministry of Higher Education almost tore themselves apart in the hotel where they are lodged the other day. Do I need to tell you why they decided to revise their karate lessons? Well, both wanted the same midnight game contender. Surprising? Actually, cynics have already started appealing for more of the "rubber stuff" to be ferried to Douala. Else some female students would return to their universities with bloated stomachs and even incurable STIs.
