Ghana: Global Warming Should Concern Everyone

The United States West Africa Regional Environmental Officer in Ghana, Mr. Geoff Hunt, has called on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOS) to collaborate with the government, for effective environmental programmes, to help address the issue of global warming, which is of much concern to word leaders.
He said, all should see the issue of environmental protection, as a collective effort, and proactive measures needed to be put in place, to prevent further destruction of the environment, which, he noted, was crucial for the socio economic development of every nation.
Mr. Hunt, who made the call during a visit to the 66 Artillery Regiment in Ho, to familiarize himself with woodlot, and mango plantation, engaged in by the Regiment as efforts to protect the environment, lauded the activities of the soldiers, which he said was worthy of emulation.
The Environmental Officer pointed out that another environmental problem, which needed attention, was lack of access to potable drinking water and its related challenges, which threaten the environment, adding that steps should be taken to ensure thatall persons, regardless of their geographical locations, were provided with good drinking water.
Mr. Hunt said the issue of waste management, still remained a major problem in most Africa countries, and stressed the need for effective waste management programmes, saying high population growth, was also a contributory factor to the high rate at which the environmental was being destroyed.
He noted that Ghana was trying to protect its environment, as well as create the necessary awareness about the importance of a healthy environment, which he observed was a window of hope, but stressed that there was more to be done.

Mr. Hunt said supportive programmes such as training workshops, should be organized on the need to protect the environment in communities, to enable them appreciate the fact that the sustenance of their lives, largely depended on a healthy and sustainable environment.
