A record number of 48 teams converged on the SKW soccer field in Olympia last weekend to compete in a total of 78 games to determine the overall winner in each of the U/8, U/9, U/11, U/13, U/15 and U/17 age categories.
Guided by the excellent management team of the hosts, the youth tournament set very high standards and a high level of disciple by all participants.
Eventual winners of the different age groups came from various football clubs and youth academies. "The fact that 48 teams showed up goes to show that the clubs and academies have whole-heartedly embraced the concept of youth development at club level.
"If the commitment and effort shown by all the players continues in the same vein, we are certainly on the right path of building a healthy base for football development in Namibia," said SKW PR Manager Rolf Beiter at the conclusion of the two-day tournament.
Beiter also applauded the Retirement Fund Solutions for their generous financial assistance.
Looking at the action on the pitch, Swallows FC were the winners of the Under 8 age group after dispatching Swakopmund Fußball Club (SFC) in the final.
The final of the Under 9 age group was played between Khomas Football Academy (KFA) and Namibia Youth Football Development Program (NYFDP) with KFA recording a 2-Nil victory.
SFC was once again on the receiving end when the coastal outfit was beaten 1-0 by Ramblers FC in the U/11 age group.
NYFDP displayed total dominance in the U/13 age group and ran riot against Ramblers FC - thrashing the young Rammies by 8 goals to 2 in the final.
The first of two finals between archrivals Cymot SKW and Oshikandela Ramblers FC went Ramblers' way - they secured the cup in the U/15 age group with a 2-0 victory.
The highlight of the day came in the Under 17 final - once again it was Ramblers and SKW who entertained the crowd with a 3-all stalemate.
Ramblers took an early lead but soon found themselves a goal down (2-1). However, the blue and white stripped outfit managed to squeeze an equalizer in the 2nd half, and regained the lead moments later before the hosts brought the game level again (3-3).

The scoreboard stood at 3-all after the final whistle and the tie had to be decided through the dreaded penalty shootout. The Germans finally triumphed as they ran out 5-4 winners after a tense and hard-fought final.
