Former Tanzanian sprinter Mwinga Mwanjala yesterday urged Olympic hopefuls to train hard to win medals at the games in Beijing in August.
Mwanjala, who is now the Tanzania Olympians Association (TOA)'s secretary-general said local athletes had not been impressing at the global event over the years, but now was the time to set a new trend.
"We have highly talented athletes, swimmers and a boxer capable of flapping the Tanzanian flag high in Beijing despite the present hiccups that include inadequate funding," she said.
Local athletes have been experiencing acute shortage of funds to make necessary preparations for the Beijing games.
So far seven athletes have been lined up to represent Tanzanian in August. Boxer Emillian Patrick, the swimming duo of Khalid Rushaka and Magdalena Moshi; and athletes Getuli Bayo, Dickson Marwa, Samson Ramadhani and Msenduki Mohammed form the Tanzania team.
Mwanjala said those who have been given the opportunity to carry the country's flag in China should demonstrate patriotism.

She also called on well-wishers to support the athletes both morally and materially as they prepare for the global event.
Mwanjala, who rose to stardom at a tender age of 13 by winning the national 100 metres sprint in 1973 and went on to excel in the Commonwealth games staged in Christchurch, said she was not impressed by local athletes' performance who have gone for some time now without winning medals for the country.
Tanzania has been participating in the Olympic games since 1964 in Montreal, but since then the number of medals won were few.
