Namibia: Boy Mugged, Assaulted

24 April 2008

Windhoek — A WINDHOEK teenager was mugged and assaulted on his way home from a friend's house on Tuesday, highlighting yet again the increasing danger of walking or cycling in the city, especially in the area surrounding the University of Namibia (Unam) campus.

Marcel Roux (16) says he was cycling home from a friend's house at around 18h10 when he was attacked by three robbers.

He said a man suddenly jumped on top of him, causing him to fall and land beneath the bicycle.

While he tried to regain his senses, two other figures appeared and assisted his attacker.

"One of them sat on top of me while another stood over me with a knife," he said.

The two unarmed men then started searching his pockets while throttling him with his helmet strap.

His attackers stole two cellphones that he had with him, and were about to make off with his bicycle when they were spotted by a man who was on his way to the university, Roux said.

"He jumped over a wall there and pulled out a revolver, so they fled.

He told me that he himself had recently been robbed in that same area and so had decided to get himself a gun," Roux said.

His bicycle was damaged in the scuffle, another reason he believes the thieves decided to make off without it.

Roux has not laid a complaint with the Police, saying that he doesn't think it would serve any purpose.
