Windhoek — THE United Africa Group (UAG) and Namib Sun Hotels group (NSH) yesterday announced the sale of a Windhoek landmark, the Thueringer Hof hotel, to the Protea Hotels Group Namibia.
"After lengthy negotiations the parties agreed to the sale effective May 1 2008 at an undisclosed amount," reads a joint press statement issued yesterday.
Located in the city's Independence Avenue, the hotel offers 43 rooms, banqueting and conferencing facilities, plus the popular restaurant and bar.
In the joint statement, Graham Howard, Regional Director, Protea Hotels, said it was a strategic decision on their behalf to buy the property, which was both well established and perfectly located.
Due to the Thueringer Hof's central location and conference potential, Howard said the initial plans would be to extend the conference facilities and grow the already well-established conference base the hotel offers.
The addition of the Thueringer Hof brings to 10 the number of hotels managed by the Protea Group in Namibia.
Namib Sun Hotels, a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List Group, confirmed the sale, saying it was part of a new strategic focus for its hotel and leisure division.
"We are building a new leisure division with specific focus on upmarket lodges and hotels throughout the country," said Henry Feris, Namib Sun Hotels' Managing Director.
Recently O&L announced that its tourism arm, Namib Sun Hotels, had begun operating as OLIFA Hotels & Resorts, with Kempinski Hotels set to join as operator of the establishments.
"It's certainly sad to let go of the Thueringer Hof hotel; this was however a business decision," said Feris, concluding that the hotel did not fit his company's new strategy.
