Monrovia

A new study conducted by a local media development agency has revealed that the traditional media in Liberia is barely surviving and would require solid investment to become truly independent.

The Liberia Media Center (LMC) says lack of financial resources and supporting market environment has most part left the media market under resourced at times susceptible to outside influence with the potential of undermining its independence and freedom.

In a report titled "Media Reach and Penetration Study" released yesterday, the LMC observed that as the country surges to a stable democracy, there's a huge reliance on the media for quality information evident by the results of the study.

Examples from other study conducted by a number of institutions show huge demand for information about the government and its operations not forthcoming.

Regrettably, the media center emphasized that information about the government and its activities seem concentrated in Monrovia, with huge penetration level while the vast majority of the population lives in rural Liberia.

The center pointed out that funding from this research corroborated other findings and assessment of several institutions working to improve the state of the sector in Liberia.
