The university games are more than just a game. More than the quest for medals and trophies, it is an opportunity for celebration for the students, a moment of respite from their charged academic calendar.
It is also an opportunity for the students to get to know each other and learn to live in peace and harmony. It equally offers a platform for institutions and companies to make themselves or their products known. This explains why the university games usually take the look of a celebration.
Besides the overbearing presence of the main sponsors of the vent, with their power musical caravan dishing out music and organizing quiz shows and dancing competitions, there are two brewery companies with musical caravans also trying to attract the attention of the people through animation. Almost all the university institutions participating in the games have stands where they explain the courses offered in their various schools. The Saint Louis higher of health who are in their maiden participation, went on an aggressive marketing campaign distributing flyers to people to make themselves known. There are equally companies presenting their products. A brewery company was even introducing a new soft drink developed from the local variety popularly known as 'ginger'.
In the evening, after sporting competitions, the field becomes a free for all dancing floor. With people dancing and drinking heavily as a mobile telephone company band present a musical concert. There young girls glad in the colours of the official sponsors, proposing 'call box services to the people. There is also free screening for HIV offered to the people given the level of promiscuity that go along with the winning and dinning.
