Since 2002 when the ugly face of energy shortage came out pronouncedly, several actions have been taken to remedy the situation. After handing over the production, transportation and distribution of energy to Aes-SONEL and observing that there was no miracle to immediately solve the problem of shortage, government moved ahead to conceive an ambitious programme to that effect. This programme prioritised the building of hydroelectric Power stations.
Memve'ele H.E.P.
The Memve'ele hydroelectric power project is situated on the border with Equatorial Guinea. It will be built on the River Ntem, South province. It is expected to produce about 200MW and will cost about CFA 142.3 billion. After simulations made by experts, the Memvéele hydro electric installation would be economically beneficial with an internal profitably rate of 26.8 per cent. This project will therefore yield an average production of 1.140 GWh per year of renewable energy at low cost while contributing to the development of Cameroon and the sub-region for medium and long terms. The development plan here is that of B.O.T (Build, Operate, and Transfer).
Nachtigal
This power station on the Sanaga River (Centre province), with electricity power worth 300MW, is one of the short term projects envisaged by government. It would help to improve the Alucam (Cameroon Aluminium Company) production.
Lom Pangar Dam
Situated on the Lom river in the East province, this reservoir will cover 950 km_. It will enable, on the one hand, the improvement of the Sanaga flow in the dry season worth about 925m3/second. On the other hand, it will add a supplementary guarantee of 120mw on the existing power stations of Edea and Songloulou for an average annual production of 250GWH.
This same reservoir will also help in the production of electricity thanks to the plant which will be built (about 50mw) at the foot of this dam. The storage capacity of this reservoir is 7.5 billion m3 against 7.3 billion m3 for the three existing dams of Mape, Mbakaou and Bamendjin.
Kribi Thermal gas station
The Kribi thermal station to function with natural gas, will produce energy worth 150MW. It will contribute in reinforcing electricity supply in the South interconnected network. A contract was signed in March 2006 between the SNH and the Perenco Company for the latter to develop and exploit the gas field of Sanaga-South, in the Douala/Kribi-Campo basin the product of which will be used in feeding the gas station near kribi.
Yassa Thermal station
The foundation stone of the project was laid recently by the Prime Minister in a grandiose ceremony. The Yassa project is expected to bring in additional 86 MW into the Aes-SONEL network. It goes operational in 2009. In effect, the Yassa project is one of the three major projects under the management of Aes-SONEL. The other two are, the Limbe Thermal station already operational and the Kribi gas plant expected to be operational in 2010. Since 2001, Aes-SONEl has increased energy supply by 135 MW.
