Tomorrow, roads of civil servants will lead to the nation's banks and public treasuries following the announcement yesterday by the Minister of Finance, Essimi Menye, of the payment of new salaries.
Accompanied by the Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reforms, Emmanuel Bonde, a representative of the Minister of Defence and that of the Delegate General for National Security, the Finance boss revealed during a press briefing that salaries will henceforth be paid as from the 25th of every month, beginning with the new salaries tomorrow. The press briefing, which equally served as arena for presenting samples of the new salaries for different categories of State workers and different scales was occasion for Minister Essimi Menye to recall the challenges awaiting Cameroonians in general and civil servants in particular following the Presidential gesture.
"I just came back from Washington where I participated in the World Bank/IMF General Assembly where I was asked if I would be able to pay the increased salaries in a sustainable manner", he told participants present at the briefing. "I told them, I will be able to pay for April without any major problem, but we need to work harder to make the payment sustainable". Minister Essimi Menye was particularly worried about the world food crises situation which is equally affecting Cameroon, stating that the impact of the crises might erase the happy effect of the salary increase. "Whereas we are stepping up salaries, we at the same time observe that we might not be able to eat rice", he said.
To pre-empt a situation where civil servants who have problems understanding the calculations made on their salary will invade the ministerial building and the Computer Development Centre (CENADI), the Minister of Finance assured that his department will look for a mechanism of solving such problems. "If someone fails to have his salary, then there was a problem and this must be rectified", he said.

The new salary situation will entail extra spending of about CFA seven billion. To raise this money, Essimi Menye said, revenue sources such as taxes and customs duties must be well exploited but without necessarily instituting new levies. In addition, expenditure will have to be tightened. The suspension of the buying of administrative cars falls squarely within this framework.
