Nairobi — United States Ambassador, Mr Michael Ranneberger, has opposed calls for establishment of an official grand opposition.
Ranneberger called MPs seeking to be recognised as the Opposition in Parliament self-serving politicians.
"MPs calling for a grand opposition are those who did not get jobs in Government. Kenyans should ignore them," he said.
Ranneberger said Kenyans should be worried about the lack of an opposition as PNU and ODM had formed a 50:50 based Government.
"Before they pass legislation, they have to agree. This will involve checking each other to ensure that legislation passed is for the good of Kenyans," he added.
The envoy said MPs should focus on implementing necessary legislations required by the Government to effectively function.
Ranneberger also appealed to Kenyans to be patient and allow the new Government to work. He said Kenyans should listen to President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga and follow their counsel.
Ranneberger, who was speaking during an interview with a local FM station yesterday, commended the President and the Prime Minister for visiting Rift Valley.
Meanwhile, the US Government has lifted the travel advisory issued to its citizens visiting Kenya.
Ranneberger said normalcy had returned, making it safe for foreign investors and tourists.
"The country is very much back in business and this is an exiting time to be here," the ambassador said in a letter to the Ministry of Tourism.
"Kenya is re-energised and is once again a country on the move. Look again at Kenya as an exciting destination for tourism and for doing business," he advised Americans. The ambassador said the US confidence was attributed to the implementation of the landmark power sharing agreement and naming of a coalition Cabinet.
"This has spurred a new spirit of goodwill and unity as demonstrated by the President and Prime Minister," he added.
Acknowledging the positive gesture, Tourism minister, Mr Najib Balala, said the regaining of confidence by the American citizens was vital, as it would encourage other nations to evaluate the country positively.
