A water-borne disease outbreak looms at an estate in Embu town following heavy rains in the past week.

Scores of people in Dallas estate are living in flooded houses and are calling on the government to help. Some of the residents have been displaced by the floods and have sought refuge in other estates.

A spot check by the Nation found that a lot of houses were flooded and occupants were trying to drain the water into the neighbouring Ruvingaci River. The problem has been compounded by the swelling of a seasonal swamp in the estate whose banks have burst. Residents said an outbreak of water-borne diseases looms in the area. The residents, led by councillor Ibrahim Swaleh said the problem had led to loss of property and lives. Mr Swaleh wants the government to come up with a lasting solution to the problem.

District Public health officer, Ms Peris Nyaga, said her department had advised affected families to move to higher ground and was also spraying the area with insecticides to check the breeding of mosquitoes. Ms Nyaga said an efficient drainage system was the only solution to the problem.
