Namibia: A Good Role Model

Windhoek — CLARA Bohitile, a Member of Parliament and one of the first black woman commercial farmers in Namibia, read about the plight of the Ramatex cats and promptly jumped into action by contacting farmers on neighbouring farms in the Nina District.

She has adopted two of the cats herself and found homes for another five with her neighbours.

"I was extremely shocked when I heard about the abuse of these cats and could not believe that something like this was happening in our country where any form of abuse, be it against people or animals, is against the law," she said.

So far the SPCA and Cat Protection Society have caught close to 100 cats left behind by former Ramatex workers when they returned to their countries of origin.

Most of the cats had to be put down as they were either too wild to be adopted, too sick or too weakened by starvation.

There are still about 20 cats roaming the old factory and about 30 still looking for good homes.

All the cats have been vaccinated and neutered or spayed.
