The Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU)'s Under-17 athletics team received 62 golf shirts worth N$7 000 from Hollard Insurance Namibia on Wednesday.

Celebrating their fifth year of existence, manager for personal policy Mariana van Zyl said her company is proud to be associated with the youth and sports in general.

She said it was an honour for Hollard to work with the NSSU.

The NSSU's under-17 athletics team departs for Germiston, South Africa next week to compete in the Confederation of Schools' Sport Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) Under-17 Athletics Championships from May 1-3.

Also at the handing-over was Johannes van der Wath, (a parent of two athletes), who gave a cash sponsorship of N$5 000 to the NSSU.

Van der Wath, who also travelled with the team to Gaborone, Botswana last year, said as a parent it was an honour to be part of the team as it gave him an opportunity to support his children and also be of assistance to the other athletes.

Moved by Van der Wath's contribution, the Director of Sport in the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Vetumbuavi Veii, said it was the first time that he had seen a parent giving financial assistance from his own purse.

Veii said sport always played 'second fiddle' when it came to the government's priorities, adding that government funds alone were never enough.

He therefore called on the private sector to emulate the example of Hollard Insurance Namibia.
