Liberia: LMA Vows to Detest Political Pressure

25 April 2008

The leadership of the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA) says it will not bow to any political pressure by certain government officials, to usurp its function as the custodian of market activities in the country.

According to the Secretary General of the Association, Mr. Dan Sherman, Montserrado County Superintendent, Beauty Bacon is allegedly intruding into their function at the Redemption Day Community Market on the Freeway, something he said cannot be condoned.

He also alleged that the Superintendent has installed her own officials who collect her ticket money and other funds to report to her directly on a daily basis.

Mr. Sherman said if this willful and flagrant manipulation of their constitutional mandate remains unchecked, it could hinder market activities not only in that part of Monrovia, but other parts of Montserrado County and the nation as a whole.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the LMA is calling on Vice President Joseph Boakai who has oversight responsibility of the Liberia Marketing Association to swiftly intervene, so as to ensure domestic cohesion within the market sector of the country.

However, when contacted, the Montserrado County Superintendent denied the allegation, and termed it as a calculated attempt to reduce her to public ridicule.

President Sirleaf recently mandated the LMA to remain autonomous in their operations and avoid any outside manipulation or interference.
