Last night was definitely very long for some people. We are referring to State employees gripped by the salary-calculation fever. The malady was provoked by the announcement, yesterday, that salaries calculated using the new scales will be paid as from today. Some civil servants spent the whole day scribbling figures in a bid to uncover the actual increment on their pay package. Even numskulls were on it! Funny.

Today, there will be smiles (from those whose expectations would be met) and tears (from people who will feel cheated). But who would listen to the later group? After all the media sing-song, everyone, even babies, are aware that civil servants will be super-loaded as from today.

Little wonder, some of those into financial transactions with government workers have also been busy making their own calculations. Normal. They too want their share of the national cake! Some landlords have already announced a 10 per cent increase in rents. And what about these hair dressers, tailors, mechanics, plumbers, etc, who have also planned to increase the cost of their services by 10 percent? From all indications the real calculations have just begun...
