Some secondary schools in the Northwest Province have begun receiving teachers' tables.

George Awuro Antenne, Northwest Provincial Delegate of Secondary Education, during a contact tour of some schools recently, had promised FCFA 500,000 as teachers' tables.

This, he explained, is part of this year's investment credit from the Ministry of Secondary Education. It was in fulfillment, therefore, that two tables each have been sent to the schools, each valued at FCFA 500,000.

But some teachers who received the promised proceeds have expressed dismay: "we expected to receive several tables as part of the improvement of the working conditions for the teachers; we are very disappointed. Two little tables for FCFA 500,000 is an exaggeration," a teacher in Kumbo told The Post.

Some school administrators have equally lambasted the situation, preferring student desks to tables. Some said their institutions are virtually PTA-run with inadequate infrastructure, furniture, teaching materials and teaching and support staff.

Meanwhile, controversy also arose over an investment credit of FCFA 25 million for furnishing the office of the Principal of Government Technical College, GTC, Elak Oku in Bui Division.

The colossal sum is to be used for the installation of air conditioners, fans, fridges, computers and stationery, The Post gathered.

But the Principal, Francis Nzuoma, has reportedly expressed worry over the execution of the budget, considering that the college is yet to be electrified. "An air-conditioned office in Oku is unnecessary, temperatures in the area are low,' Nzuoma argued.

At a recent meeting in Kumbo to launch the execution of the 2008 credit, the issue of the GTC Elak Oku reportedly degenerated into a heated debate. The Post later learned that the Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, for Bui Daniel Panjouono, had recommended a review of the items of the investment, with the electrification of GTC Elak inclusive.
