The Divisional Delegate for Women Empowerment and the Family, Meme, Irene Lobe Mbella, has urged women of the Division to use female condoms.

Mbella was addressing women during their zonal tour currently going on in the Division.

She said HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases, STDs, are prevalent amongst grassroots women because of ignorance.

She said their unfaithful husbands contract AIDS outside their homes and later transmit to them in the house. The Delegate disclosed that if such women were protected by the use of female condoms, they would never contact AIDS and STDs even if their husbands are unfaithful.

Mbella told the women that when they suspect their husbands of being unfaithful, the best they can do is to protect themselves from danger. But some women were worried about the difficulties of getting the condoms. They said the female condom is still very expensive, while others said their husbands might not allow them to use it.

The Delegate then distributed leaflets to the women on how to use female condoms. For those who could not read, she gave them a demonstration.Mbella advised that women must agree with their husbands to use the condoms, for the safety of both parties.

Mass Marriage

A mass marriage scheduled for May 15 would take place in Kumba in commemoration of the World Day of the Family.Mbella said since their mission is to reinforce family harmony, she decided to carry the message to the grassroots.

According to her, there have been continuous cases of abandoned spouses in her office.

She lamented that most men after staying with women for several years without a legalised marriage, end up frustrating the women by throwing them and the children on the street.

Mbella said it is on the bases of this that she is planning a mass marriage in Kumba to help couples legalise their marriages.

The Delegate said once there is a marriage certificate, the woman would have legal backing and a tool against frustration. She said this would help the man, the woman and their children to live happily. She also invited polygamous couples to go for their certificates.
