Kenya: Lecturer Killed in Crossfire in Uganda

Nairobi — A Kenyatta University lecturer has been shot dead in Uganda.

Francis Onyango was shot by a stray bullet fired by alleged Uganda Revenue Authority anti-smuggling unit officers.

The officers were pursuing smugglers in Tororo before Mr Onyango met his death.

Mr Onyango's sister, Phoebe Awere, told the Saturday Nation on Friday that his brother was killed on Thursday after he had travelled to the town from Nairobi to visit his family before tragedy struck.

Eyewitnesses said the chase started from Busitema junction along the Kenya-Kampala road after smugglers refused to stop at a roadblock. It ended at Bazaar Street in Tororo Town when they shot at the smugglers in a salon car but the bullets strayed and hit Mr Onyango.

After the incident, the smugglers' vehicle rammed into a stationary truck but the occupants jumped out and took to their heels.

Tororo police chief Gaundencio Okumu confirmed the death of Mr Onyango from Agururu area in Uganda.

Before he met his death, Mr Onyango was riding a bicycle in the town where he had gone shopping.

Mr Onyango's sister has vowed to sue the Ugandan government over the incident.

Meanwhile, two suspects were on Friday arrested in connection with the brutal attack of a primary school head teacher in Kirinyaga District.

They were seized by the police from their hideouts in Kerugoya Town and locked up at the local police station following the attack.

Mr Eliud Kinyua Mugo was returning home at around 7pm on Tuesday when gangsters attacked him in Kaitheri village of Central division.
