Benjamin Brunner from the Fysal Cycling Club at Oshakati on Saturday won the Distell Namibia sponsored Hunters Cycling Race for the second year in the row.
It was a race of 60km between Oshakati town in the Oshana Region and Oshikuku village in the Omusati Region.
Valombola Johannes Mario of the Tuyeni Cycling Club was the runner-up while Fahiem Hasanparker, also from the Fysal Cycling Club, was the third best cyclist of the race. The first three cyclists, Brunner, Mario and Hasanparker, were each awarded a bicycle worth about N$12 000, T-shirts and caps.

The next seven best cyclists of the 45 entrants were awarded less expensive bicycles for their efforts, while three more cyclists walked away with caps and T-shirts won through a lucky draw during the closing function held at Distell Namibia's depot in Oshakati. One of the organisers of the race, Eddy 'Man of Action' Wilbard, commended the company for its continuous sponsorship of cycling competitions in the previously neglected northern part of the country.
Wilbard urged other local business entities to emulate this example by also contributing to sports development. Sport, Wilbard said, does not only benefit participants with prizes, but it keeps them fit, healthy and away from roaming the streets where people, especially the youth, could become victims of social evils like rape and alcohol abuse.
Distell Namibia, under its Hunters brand, sponsored the race to the tune of N$40 000. The event was introduced last year and the company has decided to sponsor it on an annual basis.
