A non-governmental organisation, LAPO Development Foundation (LDF), Nyanya-Gwandara, a subsidiary of Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO), joined the rest of the world in celebrating the World Malaria Day, on Friday with the theme "Malaria, A Disease Without Border".
A sensitisation session held at Nyanya-Gwandara, Karu local government area Nasarawa State, recently, for members of the immediate sorroundings of the NGO, was facilitated by the health department, Karu local government area.
LDF assistant general manager, Ugo C. Ezeana, said malaria has remained the number one public health problem in the country and has over the years created financial handicap for every one.
In a chat with LEADERSHIP, Ezeana, explained that from inception LAPO's approach to poverty alleviation had been the credit-plus-approach. This, she said, was because poverty alleviation efforts could not be effective if other issues such as health and social empowerment were not addressed, including giving information on health and micro business managment.
She added that LDF was adopted in 2006, when LAPO decided to transform into a micro finance Bank in line with the CBN's policy on micro finance.
According to her, the mission was to provide access to health care facilities, conduct training and research and provide advocacy services, so as to enhance educational quality, equity and good governance among women and youth in target communities.
