Some 500 households in the Centre and North-West Provinces are currently receiving free treated mosquitoes nets from the government.

The 2008 official launching campaign for the distribution process of impregnated mosquitoes nets took place over the weekend at Nanga-Eboko in the Upper-Sanaga Division of the Centre Province. The event, which was presided over by the Minister of Public Health, André Mama Fouda, coincided with the First World Day for the fight against Malaria. The Day was celebrated under the theme "Malaria: a Disease Without Borders" with the slogan "Let's Unite Against Malaria".

Statistics from the World Health Organisation (W.H.O) indicate that malaria, which is a treatable disease, kills up to three million people and affects up to 500 million people in a year. In Sub-Saharan Africa malaria causes more than one million deaths in infants and children under age five. Approximately, malaria kills over 3,000 children each day in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In Cameroon, statistics indicate that close to 45 per cent of consultations in hospitals are due to malaria, particularly amongst children. That is why Minister André Mama Fouda said braving the bad roads and covering some 170 kilometres from Yaounde to Nanga Eboko was worthwhile especially as the area is an endemic zone to malaria. He noted that this shows the importance the State gives to the prevention and the fights against the parasital disease, malaria. According to him, the free distribution of treated bed nets is one of the methods to fight the transmission of malaria.

The current distribution of free long lasting bed nets concerns the Centre and the North-West Provinces. From the 25-30 April, 261,000 treated bed nets will be distributed in the Centre Province as against 234,505 in the North West Province. The distribution process will later continue in the Littoral and West Provinces.

The Minister of Public Health, joined by the Minister of Public Works, Bernard Messengue Awom the Secretary General of the Chantal Biya Foundation, Habissou Bidoung and other dignitaries from the Upper Sanaga Division, did not only distribute treated bed nets to children from 0- 5years as well as pregnant women, but also made a visit to the Chantal Biya Centres for Voluntary HIV Testing at the Upper Sanaga Division as well as the Nanga Eboko, Mbandjock and Ndjore District Hospitals.
