The belated call by Tanzania Olympic Committee secretary Filbert Bayi to Athletics Tanzania officials to speed up the presentation to the organisers of our athletes' credentials is worrying.

This could be an indication of the likely failure by Tanzania to be well represented in the Olympic Games in Beijing, just a few months away.

It was clear right from the beginning that athletes who have already won Olympic berths needed to beat the deadline set by the organisers.

The deadline was April 15, but to the utter surprise of many sports lovers, Athletics Tanzania made such a shocking oversight.

To be frank, AT officials must shoulder the blame for the terrible laxity that might cause some unnecessary hassles to our athletics team upon arrival in China.

Four athletes qualified for the Games more than six months ago.

Therefore, the TOC secretary's appeal can only mean that something is not right within the athletics organisation.

The swimming officials have a good reason for the delay in presenting their team's credentials.

But worth praise are the leaders of the Boxing Federation of Tanzania, who easily beat the deadline.

It's disappointing, therefore, that an organisation led by a man who in his heyday excelled as an athlete, could have shamed him by committing such a blunder! Presenting credentials after the deadline does not necessarily mean they will miss the Games, but rather it's bound to be a source of inconvenience as the team leaves for the August event.

It's high time the leaders of our sportsmen and women worked beyond their normal call of duty to ensure the country's smooth participation in the coming Olympics.

It's quite a long time since Tanzania won any medals in these games.

Therefore, our Olympic hopefuls must be given the best possible treatment so that they can excel in their various disciplines.
