Dorothy Njeuma, president of FENASU makes an appraisal of the just ended university Games.
What is your appraisal of the 11th edition of the university games which has just come to an end in Douala?
I think the games have gone exceptionally well. The infrastructure that was provided by the University of Douala for the games have considerably good quality. The practical organisation as far as logistics are concerned, has been of acceptable level. There are always a few problems here and there at the beginning but those problems were quickly solved. The competitions have gone on very well. Athletes have competed very keenly for the victory of their respective teams.
What is responsible for the absence of 'mercenaries' in the games this year?
It is the result of sanctions that we have taken in previous games. The penalties have been quite heavy. I think that is why there have not been any reported cases of mercenaries reported in the games, except for the unfortunate case of a player of Yaounde I who is a twin and used the identity of the twin brother. So we sanctioned that case.
Your institution has been dominating the games, but what happened this year?
The point is that everybody comes to the games to win. I believe that with time, the other teams also have made a lot of progress. Besides, the athletes of Yaounde I have moved to other institutions like the school of sports and the public works school. You can see that those two institutions especially have done particularly well in the games. I am proud that the University of Yaounde I served as a nursery.
Is it said that you screened the list of athletes and expurgated the mercenaries who used to fetch the medals for your institution, is it true?
Yes, the list at the level of the registration of the players was very seriously screened. However, we still have a chance to bounce back and top the charts on this last day of competitions. We have won a good number of medals today and can still win the games.
We are at the 11th edition of the university games and FENASU still has a provisional bureau, when are going to have a permanent bureau?
I want to say that, that will be coming up soon.
How soon is very soon?
The federations are supposed to be organised before the end of the year. It is only after then that we can put in place a permanent bureau.
