Nigeria: Niger - Two Contractors Offer to Refund N34 Million to Government Confers

Minna — Former Commissioner of Agriculture in the past administration of Engineer Abdulkadir Kure in Niger State, Alhaji Mohammed Nga and the younger brother of former governor, Abdulhammed Jantabo, have offered to refund over N34 million to the state treasury having confirmed that they did not execute the contracts for which they were paid.

Nga and Jantabo were brought before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry instituted to probe the failed contracts awarded by the past administration of the state between 1999 and 2007.

They reportedly confessed to have failed to execute the projects awarded them after collecting substantial amounts as mobilization fees and promised to return the monies if given the chance to do so.

The leading counsel to the commission, Ndagi Usman Wali, told the commission on Friday that Alhaji Nga had collected N21million as advance fee out of the N300million contract sum for the construction of a bridge across river Wayan near Kagara in Rafi Local Government Area of the state.

Jantabo, he said, also collected N34million for the supply of three water buses to the Niger State Transport Authority (NSTA), but only delivered one water bus valued at N11.5 million.

Testifying before the commission on Friday, Jantabo claimed that he purchased one water bus at the cost of N19 million as against the N11.5 million quoted on the contract agreement, adding that the balance of N13million was not enough to buy other water buses.

The former commissioner on the other hand, while testifying as a witness, accepted blame for not mobilising on site after collecting the advance fees for the construction of the bridge and offered to refund N21million he had collected to the government treasury.
